How do forest fires effect the environment?

Although the obvious answer is that they kill both vegetation and animals and spread devastation, that's a short-term view.

In the long term, they promote diversity. Without fire, a forest can stagnate. Fire also redistributes nutrients and allows life to bloom anew.
