How did the stone age people count ?

Well, we don't actually know anything about that. All the evidence indicates that humans have always lived in villages and raised crops for food. What we think of as "stone age" has always been just one or two people between towns.

There are tribes still living that count by holding pebbles between fingers, so a handful means eight, not ten. There are tribes that don't count. Their languages don't have numbers.
