How did the Protestant Reformation cause a change in the way Europeans thought in the 16th and 17th?

For just one example: The American revolution is not called that in England. It is called the Presbyterian Rebellion, and the blame is placed squarely on John Calvin even though he had been dead for two centuries before it got started.
