How did seismologists study the earth's internal structure or layers?

By definition a seismologist studies earthquakes. The speed and timing of waves allow calculation of some things based on assumptions. Some of those assumptions are accurate and some are not, but nobody knows which is which. So the primary area of study at this time is to establish the reliability of their initial assumptions. Very little is actually known about what is under our feet.
