On the most simplistic of levels there is an obvious correlation between democracy and tolerance.
Democracy relies on people holding very different views on the same issue, without tolerance of others views there would be hatred and violence between the groups resulting eventually in one side winning and forming a dictatorship.
Our ability to change our minds or appreciate someone else's view is one aspect of tolerance, thankfully in the majority of democratic nations this ability is valued and encouraged. This ability is frowned on in undemocratic nations and actively discouraged (sometimes with murder) in others, the more repressive the government the more this is true.
