I bought a car with my ex, and we are both co owners on it. It was bought and registered in Illinois originally. He took it to Arizona when he moved there and wasn't making the payments so we agreed I could fly out there and drive it back since I was making all the payments on it. When I started driving back I got pulled over because the plates were suspended- he wasn't paying for the insurance on it. I insured it right away thinking that would solve the problem. When I got back to Illinois I didn't know the plates were still suspended and got pulled over again because of that even though I do have the car insured and I thought because the sticker on the plate didn't expire yet, I had time to re register it in Illinois. The officer told me that just because i insured it doesn't mean they unsuspended the plates. How do I go about sorting this out now?

Her ownership papers go to DMV try to register it there. If there a hold then you got to resolve what ever reasons the hold is put on the plates or vehicle. If past parking tickets them need to pay them. If it the finance company that you have loan on then you got pay up to date. Since both your names on title you can't say you just bought it. That only way around it. If I were you I'd take your ex name off the ownership papers and loans. Just go talk to DMV find out what they say to do.
