I suffered with anorexia about 10 years ago and I had a bad experience with exercise and doing too much of it. I made myself quite ill doing a lot of running and got addicted to it. I need to get fit again but I'm worried I'll go down the same route again.

Did you not get therapy or are you not in therapy now? It is almost impossible to get passed any eating disorder without it. Sooner or later something is likely to trigger those feelings and you are off on a down hill slide because you never learned how to recognize triggers and not let them bother you or know how to respond to them and keep control of your life. Exercise could be a trigger for you.
I can only suggest therapy. I can suggest you go to the gym on an established schedule only no drviation. Also for a designated amount of time only...30 minutes twice a week. Do that for a month then kick it up to 3 times a week. If you eventually can handle more, stick to 3 times a week for an hour no more.
What you can get done in your 30 min is all you do. Pack it in and go home.
Elliptical, bike, rowing machine are all good. You can walk around the block and practice squats at home. 12 blocks (that's around the block 3 times) = 1 mile do it in 15-20 minutes and you are burning calories.
Therapy! Good luck!
Counseling with help.
I used to have a really hard time with my body and understanding that it’s about being healthy and when your healthy you feel good and it’s for you not everyone else. I went from focusing on loosing weight to gaining muscle I go to the gym four to five times a week I stay for any from an hour to three but I go with friends and I make sure I eat my weight in grams of protein. Good luck
