external respiration refers to the exchange of gas (CO2 and O2) between the lungs (alviolo) and blood (pulminary capilaries) while internal respiration is the diffusion of gas between interstitial fluid and cytoplasm, involves the uptake of O2 and production of CO2 within individual cells
