The development of ancient Greece was largely due to their geography. The terrain wasn't easily traversable and so they formed many small city-states where independent ideas allowed them to flourish. However, because the terrain was difficult to traverse, they didn't really develop the idea of using horses or camels like other civilisations did. Instead, the Greeks were a seafaring nation.
