The only proposal I have heard was from a martial arts instructor. The karate yell is a big deal, and this fellow noticed that it varied according to ethnicity: Japanese students tended to sound like "eh-ee" and Americans tended to sound like "heeyaw" or "hooey". He suggested that it was due to genetic differences in the shapes of the vocal tracts.
