...  within two months, and upon full payment the car would sighned over.months went by with now untill they decided they no longer wanted the vehicle But demanded there deposit back. It's been a year now and I have not been able to sell the car for the original price. Am I obligated to return the deposit

verbal agreement has no value at all. Plus you also cannot prove your ownership on the vehicle. You better get a lawyer, and ask for the year maintenance of the car from the other party. Which would decrease your payback amount. 
Think it this way, what if you are charged for GTA?
Its better you get rid of piece of crap, and just ask for 1 year maintenance. Even though that's quite difficult since you don't have any agreement.
