In a society, we tend to try to seem confident and strong in front of our peers. In other words, we are proud when we're around other people. Maybe that phrase means that, when approaching God, you needn't try to look high and mighty, since you are, after all, in the presence of something much much greater than you. You can look up to him without the fear of looking poor, or cowardly, or weak.
