The theme of the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson shows that tradition is not always beneficial, and sometimes needs to be updated to retrofit the wants and needs of the villager’s. The villager’s inability to make changes to their cruel tradition, tells the reader that they have plateaued as a society.
