i'd like to record a film of me playing a guitar solo and put it on facebook. is it legal? if not - what is the chance of me being actually sued? =D

Strictly it's illegal because it would constitute a "performance" but unless you are making money out of it, I'd very much doubt you'd get sued. YouTube is full of people performing the music of others. I think the artists tend to think of it as free advertising rather than copyright theft.
