Great britain took over new netherland, what way did the colonists not become british citizens?

They revolted against the taxes the British levied on them, eventually managing to get all but one product tax free. That last product (tea) brought about the Boston Tea Party which, in itself, brought about the American War of Independence and those British citizens then became American.
