I'm going to ask my girlfriend to marry me and I want to set the mood by singing her a long song that I wrote to her. The only proper is I can't write songs to save my life! Has anyone got some really good tips to write a heartfelt song for her?

Try thinking about what is unique about her that you really like. How do you feel when you're around her? Maybe think about when you first met, what was going on at that moment. When did you realize you love her? Try to think of the exact moment when you realized you had to marry her and what it will mean to you to know she will be with you for the rest of your life.
Write these things down on paper, then re-read it and look for common elements, deeply-felt emotions, and circle or highlight those words. Is there something unique you two say to each other? What is the tone you want your song to have: brooding, intense, light, funny? You might want to use a thesaurus to help you find the words that say best how you feel. And don't worry about it being perfect! She will love all the work you put into it, all the thoughtfulness and consideration of her as a uniquely beautiful, loveable woman.
And keep the papers you write on! No matter how sloppy or silly it might seem to you, there just might come a valentine's day or anniversary when you will want to give it to her. GOOD LUCK!!
