get the electrolytes you need to perform.
What does these claims really mean in terms of physiology?
Gatorade claims that their drinks are "designed to deliver hydration to athletes" and will help?

A twelve oz. Gatorade contains enough electrolytes for someone who has just went through a typical heavy workout. It mainly contains sodium and potassium salts, which are often sweated out during a workout. It also contains a small amount of sugar to give you some energy, as you presumably just burnt a bunch during a workout.
The body cannot produce minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium on it's own.
