They both provide a stable income and both provide a good wage. Neither is a career choice in the strict sense of the word. Reputation is everything with both those jobs rather than a hierarchy.
Essentially if you like outdoor work be a carpenter, if you like indoor work be an electrician. The reason being that most of your work is likely to be on building sites. My Uncle was a carpenter by trade and easily supported a family of 4 in a modest house and most of his regular work was contractual on building sites doing window and door frames. Occasionally he would get people asking for specific work, one offs etc adn that was where the good money was but making a living off that is very hard indeed. Conversly an electrician will always find work and will always be in demand but to get teh best money he (or she) has to travel or be specialised. The best paid electricians in the UK work in shipyards or for companies that have military contracts.
