My friend took it to shop and he authorized the repair for $1040, without discussing it first with me (I would not have put that money into it, as I only expected a $150 diagnostic fee) Was told it needed $4500 more of work. I declined to fix further. When I went to pick it up, I paid the $1040 bill due. Then I sold it back to shop for $1040. My friend wants his half of the bill back. Is that right? Bear in mind, I would NEVER have put that much money into it, I would have just dropped selling price down.

You paid the bill, right? If your 'friend" did not pay anything, you need to tell this friend to take a hike!! Since you did not say it was ok to do any work on the ski, you should be extremely angry someone said to. In fact, the "friend" should pay YOU $1040 !!!! Wow, what a jerk...
