Ask them ahead of time what topics to stay clear of.
Ask them what topics they are okay with.
NEVER discuss religion, politics, or sex! Worst topics ever.
NEVER discuss gossip or personal information about anyone including yourself.
Get people talking about themselves and you just nod and smile. Talk about the children how is school their activities, anybody's hobbies, books they read, vacations, movies. Do not discuss dating, divorces or deaths.
Play family games and have fun without gambling on topics.
Take some cookies, go say hello, drop off you food, chat for an hour then leave and go to the movies and you'll have put in an appearance and done your duty.
I had the same problem. After living among some nice people for a while I finally figured that I was just like my mother: crabby, bad manners, griping all the time, no social skills. I tried to improve by watching movies to see how normal people act, but they don't seem to make movies about normal people any more. You can take acting classes. That might help.
