Family leave bowl of milk on doorstep for a gremlin, come back to check and bowl is empty what film?

in the film the family talk to their child saying if they left a bowl of milk on their doorstep and gremlin will come and drink it then they put the bowl outside on their doorstep and the milk is gone, really want to know what film that was as i was scared to watch it when i was a kid.
