Help! My mother and I need help with my 19 year old brother. He has not eaten solid food in 2 years due to believing there has been something stuck in his throat. So far the doctors have found nothing. He does not leave his room. He sits and plays video games all the time. I recently got him a job with me, he worked a total of 3 days and just decided not to go anymore. Won't call them, won't get out of bed. We are desperate to find help. Are there specialists that can come into the home and do some sort of intervention? Please any answer is helpful.

First question: does he feel pain when he eats solid food?
Second question: what does he usually eats?
Playing video games all the time is normal, especially when you have no obligations or other aspiration in life.
Especially if you don't have any other aspirations in life.
Unfortunately for you, seeing that he quit from job after 3 days of work, means that he was raised with "failed parenting techniques" - he has very low motivation, and very low sense of responsibility, with possible very bad working habits.
Yes, all this can be fixed - but you must ask yourself question: How far am I wiling to go?
Things that you can do to help your brother:
- create the need for him to get a job
- help him to find a carrier path that will interest him
- create the need for him to get out of the house
Besides all that, please take acknowledge that he can be clinically depressed individual, and that only medication can help him overcome that.
But also, a warning: try other ways to deal with his depression before you put him on drugs.
They can backfire.
