I got a call from an "unknown number" saying a client of theirs is suing me for debt. They confirmed my name and SSN. I didn't want to confirm but I needed to get to the bottom of this so I said "Yes", and they said I owed money to Chase Bank since opening an account in 2009. I NEVER opened an account with Chase, and I just checked my credit report and there are no notifications that I have any credit card debt or any record of me opening an account with Chase. The guy then gave me the full account number, date it opened, and told me to call Chase myself and check. My question is... what's in it for them? How were they planning to scam me?? Anyone with similar experience or knowledge of this kind of scam?
They now have a recording of your voice. They can remix that to achieve a lot of evil things. For instance, if you said "yes" they can use that to make a phony contract and take you to court to enforce it.
Just stop answering unknown numbers.
