"Religion" is a word with no specific meaning. The bible says religion is something made up by people telling each other what to do. There are religions devoted to murdering strangers. There are religions where you worship by stealing things. There are religions, all claiming to be Christian, where nobody knows what to believe and they can't agree on how a person should behave. There are religions where every family has an altar in their house and they decide for themselves what to believe and what to do and they won't let anybody outside the family know about it.
Religion is just one of many things that might influence a person's behavior. There is nothing magical about the process.
Religion - A form of worship. It includes a system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices; these may be personal, or they may be advocated by an organization. Usually religion involves belief in God or in a number of gods; or it treats humans, objects, desires, or forces as objects of worship. Much religion is based on human study of nature; there is also revealed religion. There is true religion and false.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 says: "The conclusion of the matter, everything having been heard, is: Fear the true God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole obligation of man."
In addition to fearing Jehovah, Christians must love him with their whole heart. (Matthew 22:37, 38)
Fear of God is a feeling Christians should have toward their Maker. One definition of this fear is “an awe and a profound reverence for the Creator and a wholesome dread of displeasing him.” Thus, fear of God influences two important aspects of our lives: our attitude toward God and our attitude toward conduct that he hates.
Faith without works is dead (James 2:24, 26). So we must have works that backup our faith. This is backed up by Jesus when he said by their fruits you will recognize them and the kingdom of God will be given to a nation producing its fruits (Matthew 7:16 ;21:43). Also, it is out of the heart's abundance that the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). So our faith is shown by our works and in the words we speak.
Having religious faith will influence our behaviour because religions teach us about God, they teach us about prayer, they teach us about values, morals and ethics, they even impart the fear of God as they talk of heaven and hell. All the teachings of religions are mostly good teachings because they teach us to live a life of compassion, of humanity, of goodness, and kindness and love. These are the common teachings of all religions. Therefore, religious faith builds the foundation for good behaviour. However, this is just the beginning. Most religions make us go round and round in a merry-go-round and we die. We must go beyond our religion, not change it, but go beyond to reach the university of spirituality, to realize the ultimate truth.
