Does restoring my iphone wipe out the data on the phone?

i know that when you restore data on a PS3 you don't lose it. because you're restoring the data (getting it back.) if you were restoring your Iphone to it's default settings or reformatting your Iphone then you'd lose your data unless you had back up data.
