I recently had new carpets put in my house, and as a family we decided that we would become a "shoes off" type home. We now leave our shoes by the door in the garage on a rug where we enter most often. My kids seem to be ok doing this, and I am enjoying how much cleaner things are staying when we just wear socks inside. My question is for guests, how do you handle a shoes off home with your guests? I am not sure how to ask someone to take off their shoes, or if anyone has experience with visitors to their home for the first time after a shoes off rule change.

Most people wouldn't mind following the rule, as they themselves probably like to keep things clean. I myself respect peoples homes enough to do so. If I see bundles of shoes at the door and bare feet in the house goes to say common sense should kick in. Although some people do lack this ability I see no reason why visitors would be opposed to you asking this of them. After all it is your home and if they don't like it they can remain outside. :) Respect is something lost these days and needs to be renewed in society.
Have an uncle like that. It's no problem if you invite civil company, just inform them and leave a large assortment of your family's shoes in the entrance as a reminder.
Did you know some long distance flights provide these little disposable slippers? Mayhap you can acquire a few pairs for anyone uncomfortable with bare feet or socks.
