Do the motors on Multicopters, have to be positioned directly below the Propellers?

I'm in the process of designing a Qudcopter and currently debating as to whether or not it is possible to position the motors elsewhere from the typical, just undernethe the prop sort of thing. 

Is it possible to achieve the thrust required to lift a quadcopter (I know it's broad, I'm just looking for an answer) with the motors positioned somewhere othe than undernethe the props?

Answer

They don't if they are electric engines (and occasionally for fueled engines) but putting the engine under the props is the simplest way to ensure correct weight distribution and is a standard feature of multicopters.
