You don't need to be connected to a telephone provider to have wifi. That's why a computer has an internet connection without a telephone provider. But you do need to have a telephone provider to have have cell phone service with voice calls and texting. A "good deal" is usually not a good deal. Consider going to the physical store to get clairification on your situation or switching service providers. Also, make sure your "data" is turned off. "Data" allows you to get an internet connection anywhere without having to be near a internet router. Data is not free and can cost a lot of money if you access the internet without data being turned off. If you use your phone at home you will still get internet but without extra charges because no data is being used since you are comnected to you house's wifi. Ask a friend if you are still confused.
