Do I need to know about the software I will use on my game art uni course before I go?

I would advise looking into it so you have an idea of what kind of computer you need and how much the program will cost you. I had to buy the CS6 suite which was $850, that was with the student discount. It retails for $2,500+. If you do buy a program for university make sure you keep the information on the class the the receipt to the program, you may be able to deduct that from your taxes.
