Do girlfriends need to hug their divorced boyfriend's kids when their is a misunderstanding ?

If they are little kids and they are upset then a cuddle is a good thing. However, it may not be the same for a teenager who are tricky at the best of times. You don't have to hug them if you don't want to you know. You can still be kind and sympathetic without being tactile. After all, they are his kids so it's his job to sort them out.
