Do car rental companies allow smoking in the cars?

When I rented several cars there was no mention of it, but that was 30 years ago, before the country went bonkers.

The thing about tobacco smoke is it gets into the ac blower and you can't clean it out; you have to replace the entire ac, fan, ducts, everything, to get rid of the smell. A non-smoker can detect it instantly. So you would be well advised not to smoke in any rental car.
