Difference between compiler and interpreter?

Both jobs deal with the transition of one language to another language. However, a compiler is working with printed texts, for example translating books, scripts, manuals and other similar printed compilations. The work is mostly done at home or in an office and the involved party is only the compiler.

An interpreter on the other hand is working in the field of transferring the spoken word from one language to another. There are two forms of interpreting: simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. Simultaneous interpreting can often be found at international meetings or conferences. The interpreter sits in a booth and listens to the speech given in language A via headphones. While he is listening he immediately repeats the content of the speech in language B. Conference participants who for example cannot understand Japanese will be able to listen to the interpreter's translation of the speech in real time (while the speaker is still talking). Consecutive interpreting is a manual form of interpreting often used during opening speeches and such. The interpreter will take notes during a speech and after the speaker has finished he will go up to the podium and present the same speech in a different language.
