In pre-modern times, did people who lived in remote parts of large empires (e.g. the Russian Empire) know who their king, tsar, emperor etc. was? Or if they lived in that empire at all?

i think when they were growing up and had educational teachings this was how most figured out what or who their empires were and who was actually the head of those empires i think also that our parents let us know who they seen as the head of those empires if they liked what the head of state did our parents would try to bistow in use what the right things to do were when we could actually understand what that was about
