A light chord passing voer a frictionless puley has a 7kg mass tied to one end and a 9kg mass on the other. Determine acceleration of masses and tension in chord, assuming it to be inextensible.

The answers are:
Acceleration=1.2 m/s^2
Tension=80N

How do you get to those answers?

Answer

m1=9kg
m2=7kg
g=9.81N/kg
mt=m1+m2=16kg

For acceleraton:
m1*g-m2*g=mt*a
a=g(m1-m2)/mt=1.22m/s^2

for tension:
m2*g+m2*g=T
T=82N
