I know I'm depressed,I have been for probably three years now and I haven't told anyone because I'm embarrassed. Since it has been along time it's starting to get worse and I've harmed myself many times and have almost committed suicide multiple times. I want to tell someone but I don't know how and I'm afraid if I don't get help soon I might do bad things. What do you do when you tell your doctor you are depressed? How do they diagnose that you might have depression or anxiety? What do they do?

Hey there!
I have and still am in your shoes. I am now 24 and my depression started to get very bad when I was in middle school. I used to get sent home over hurting myself. Over time it only got worse. I finally decided that I needed help after. Long long story short I didn't have a doctor. I never had gone to the doctors before unless it was the emergency room or urgent care over the flu. So I found a doctor not a pysciatrist. I told him that I was very depresed and it has been causing me major anxiety. After that he asked me a few simple questions and gave me a simple 10 question paper test. The only thing the test is for is to find out if you have ADHD or Depression. After that he prescribed me an anti depressant to try and anxiety medicine. The doctor will give you a trail month and you just let them know how you are feeling with it. It took me 5 different anti-depressants to find the one that works best for me. If you tell the doctor that you have or have been hurting yourself he/she will have you sent more than likely to a psychiatrist or someone that can evaluate you for a couple days. Since I have been on medicine i have not hurt myself. Definitly tell your doctor if the medicine makes you feel more depressed that way they can switch you. Different medicines work for different people. I hope this helps.
