I am kind of confused by Korean culture. I am at a crossroads at college with many different friends from many different cultures, but one of my best (older) friends is Korean. Whenever I say something with (in comparison to them) a youthful naivety however well intentioned, I can expect to get hit by my Korean friend, and sometimes scolded. Is this a common thing in Korea?

I do not encounter this with friends from different cultural backgrounds, and I happen to be the youngest of the group, if that plays into things.

Without researching Korean culture the easiest answer is this - STOP making the darn comparisons! It doesn't get a good response. How many times does it have to happen before you catch on?!
Obviously it's something that upsets your friend...so don't do it! You tell your friend, "Xxxx, let's do a compromise, from here on out I will stop making comparisons which you may find insulting and you will stop hitting me which I consider unmannerly, let's shake on it."
Then the two of you continue your friendship on a more mature level.
I don't suppose it ever occurred to you to simply ask your friend, "Did something I say bother you?"
I explored that road, but everything was fine. There is no ill intentions or misunderstood things. It's mainly occurs when I ask questions or am surprised about new things. I'm sorry if I am not articulating myself well enough.
