Could a Springfield Model 1855 Rifle-Musket kill some one at a distance of 800 yards?

So, I'm writing a short story and need some help with guns. I know the 1855 Springfield rifle-musket has a firing range of up to 1,000 yards and that its effective range is between 200 to 300 yards. Does that mean it would be no good at longer shots or could it in theory still kill someone at 800 yards?

I know this doesn't answer exactly but I've seen a shooter take shots at 650 yards and be on target, not to sure of the actual damage, or wether or not that'd be a kill shot. or not... hope that helps?
