I wish to make composite images of album/cd covers of hits from a particuler year and sell these. Each composite would contain 50+ images each image about 10..20 mm in size. These images would be downloaded from several internet sites. Have I infringed copyright law?

Yes you have. One work-around or exception in this regard is the copyright "Fair Use" law which allows use of a copyright protected image, without permission, if the finished work makes a social statement. That includes political or social protest or statement. It also includes parody in general.
