Well here is my situation. Last year I was laid off and while unemployed I went back to college and got an associates degree in computer forensics. Since there were no good jobs in the area, and I'd have to move eventually to allow my wife to find the work she wants, I decided to talk to an Air Force recruiter. After taking the ASVAB he told me he would like me to take the DLAB. If I am fortunate enough to score high and get a position as a linguist that would work out great, if not another job in intelligence would be fine or just about any. My hopes are that if I do join that one day I could possibly secure a position with the FBI or another agency. My predicament is that I just obtained a well paying job as a maintenance millwright which was my previous job and I worry with the economy being the way it is leaving could be the wrong choice. I am 26 yrs old, and would be pretty close to getting a bachelors degree if I do go back to college, which would be kinda hard to do if I stay at this job. I feel like this decision will be one which defines the rest of my life, I got people who think I am nuts for wanting to go and others think it is a great idea. I feel I have plenty of potential and in the end I'd rather be happy doing something I am passionate about than making loads of money. My father was a millwright too, growing up I didn't see him much, I know I'll be away from my wife and child in the service too but I feel like I might be able to open up more possibilities for them as well. I would just like to hear someones thoughts on the matter. Thank you.

I have been in the Air Force for five and a half years now and I can say: you cannot beat the job security that military offers. As far as joining Air Force intelligence as a segue into FBI or other related jobs without risking your current job, may I suggest Air Guard or Air Force Reserves? You get the education and can keep your current job (most employers are prohibited from firing you while you are in basic training and tech school). Intel is a job which does deploy a lot, so you will also get a lot of on the job training and experience, plus you will usually make a decent amount of deployment money.
Hello! Yes, I am only a teenager. But! I’ve researched my whole life into being a Air Force recruit / pilot. I will not tell you anything I “think” is right, I will tell you everything I KNOW from the bottom of my heart. First of all, STAY IN COLLEGE, some jobs in the Air Force require degrees. Like a fighter jet, you must have a bachelors degree to start training. Remember, most military activities aren’t as fun as you think. Basic training is required for all military branches. If you want to enlist, before you even think of enlisting again, look at all the jobs and requirements for the jobs. I wish the best of luck with your decisions. Go Air Force!
