Computer going VERY slow all of a sudden?

THE PROBLEM: My computer has suddenly started going very slow and minimized windows such as Firefox etc do not come back up once clicked (I have to right click and select "close all tabs" which provokes the window to reappear asking me if i really want to close all tabs - it's the only way to get a window back up once minimized).  When I had several Word docs open, i used to be able to hover over the task bar icon and all docs would appear at cursor and i would just have to click on the one I wanted.  Now none of them appear at the hover, and I have to do something similar to what I mention above just to get a document back up.

THE QUESTION: The only thing "new" i have done recently is create a Facebook page - and I have several Words with Friends games going with several Facebook friends.  Now in between pages loading I see the word Derefer - is any of this the culprit - and if so how can I fix it?

You might want to download two virus scan programs, and if you cannot get those to run, try an online scan.  I say run two as different programs are more designed for different types of problems. Also, Spybot and Adaware are good programs to run. Once you spend the time for really lock down your computer, it runs smoother, just set the scans to happen when you do not use the computer (1 am or so).
