I'm 5'1", and 130 pounds (female, if it matters). Pretty short legs, and arms. I'm interested in getting a bike this coming year, and I'm curious if anyone has any feedback on what to start off with as a trainer bike. I've read a lot on the topic, but every site I read has 10 different bikes recommended, and a bunch of comments saying how those bikes aren't the best to recommend. Kind of overwhelming. Just looking for some opinions/personal stories, whatever will help, I'm sure i'll have to have my own personal trial and error to find what's right for me, but I'd appreciate feedback anyways. Thanks.

This mainly comes down to rider preference, but go small first to develop your riding skills. There are a lot of options, but those options are pretty good ones. A lot of 250cc and the newer Ninja 300 would make good intro bikes into the sport bike world. There are also cruiser style 250ccs like the Honda Rebel that would be very easy to handle and learn on. Don't go too big or buy a supersport because of peer pressure. Plenty of time for that later once you have the basics down. You very well might drop your first bike a few times so don't feel like you have to buy new. Used will be cheaper and a lot of great bikes are used. Good luck!
your first bike should be one that suits your riding style, I would suggest an entry level cruiser like the Yamaha VStar 250, this bike has a low seat height and low center of gravity with slightly pulled back handlebars for easy steering and control. I have lots of info for you on my blog at motorcycle sources.com, and don't forget to sign up then tell you friends as well!
