How to add fractions with like denominators
3/8 + 7/8 = 10/8 = 1 2/8 = 1 1/4
3+7= 10
denominator: 8 is left the same
since 8/8 = 1 how many times does 8 go into ten?
8 goes into 10 once = 8/8= 1
+ the 2 left over = 1 2/8
Reduced down:
2 divided by 2 = 1
8 divided by 2 = 4
Which means the reduced fraction 2/8= 1/4
The total answer is 1 1/4.
10/15 + 3/5 =
First make the denominators common. You need to find the equivalent of 3/5. Chance the denominator 5 to 15 by multiplying by 3
3x5=15
You have the denominator. Now the numerator.
3x3 = 9
Which means the equivalent of 3/5 is 9/15. Now you can add.
10/15 + 9/15 = 19/15.
Now you have to reduce it down.
How many times does 19 go into 15? Once
Plus the four left over= 1 4/15 which cannot be reduced down.
How to add Mixed Numbers
2 3/4 + 1 1/4. You have two ways of doing this particular problem:
1. Add the whole numbers and then the fractions:
2+1 = 3
3/4+ 1/4 = 4/4 which is equal to 1. So now add the two together.
3+1= 4
2. Change the mixed numbers into improper fractions; you do this with mixed numbers that have unlike denominators.
First take the whole number and multiply it by the by the denominator. 2 x 4 = 8. Then add that to the numerator. 8 plus 3 = 11.
11/4 = 2 3/4
Do the same with the second mixed number.
1 x 4 + 1 = 5
5/4 = 1 1/4
Now add:
11/4 + 5/4 = 16/4
Now change the improper fraction into a mixed number.
How many times does 4 go into 16? 4 times.
16/4 = 4
Same answer both ways. Hope this helps. :) ^.^
