I got in trouble for leaving school at 3 (normal time) during some workshop that finishes at 9 pm. I was never told by any teachers previously that there would be this workshop, nor my parents knew. Is this allowed? I am in elementary school in grade 8 in British Columbia

I am a teacher in Quebec, so it might be different, but I would think you would have to be notified of the workshop to be punished for not attending. How were the other students notified? By mail? Verbally? By phone? If you can prove that you did not receive this notification, you should not be penalized. Also, ask the school to show you proof of their notification to you. Another thing: You say you are in elementary school, yet you say grade 8. Elementary school ends in Grade 6 in Canada, as far as I know, unless it is different in BC? Anyway, I find 9:00 pm to be quite late for a 12 year-old to finish school. What on Earth was this workshop about? Sleep deprivation in our youth?
