Any other suggestions are appreciated. The little gem magnolia has waxy leaves are smaller than other varieties, bloom all summer and are fragrant. I am looking to plant one or another tree that has similar qualities that will grow in this area.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 7 to 10, you are possibly in Zone 6- there are other varieties suitable for cooler climates, but they are not a dwarf variety (I think):
Hardy zone 6 magnolia trees include Star magnolia (Magnolia stellata), which grows in USDA zone 4 through 8, and Sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana), which grows in zones 5 through 10. Cucumber tree (Magnolia acuminata) is an extremely tough tree that tolerates extreme cold winters of zone 3. Hardiness of Saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangiana) depends on the cultivar; some grow in zones 5 through 9.
