I haven't tried it, but as far as I could remember, I just checked and looked for a credible locksmith in my area. Also, a friend had recommended atlantalockmaster.com. They were dependable as he says they were. Indeed they were. Not because I don't know how to take the entire lock, but, it was a good thing I called them. They went to my house, checked the lock and made me a new set of keys.
You can only do that if you purchased your lock on the store where you are going to bring them. Some hardware stores do services like that, but the best way to get a key for that is to get a locksmith that will do it for you. Just like from allservicemaster.com, it is their duty to provide and make keys for you. Less hassle on your part and very convenient.
You don't really have to be involved in the hassle to unscrew the lock from the door and take it to the hardware store. Instead you can contact any nearest locksmith, or I will recommend to use best locksmith in the area and they will do the job for you. This will definitely cost a little more than taking it to the hardware store, but this will the most convenient method.
I recommend you to contact Golden-Locksmith-Tx, as I had a great experience using their services.
Thanks!:) Do you know how much it costs?
