I had 2 together but the female died unexpectedly. Will my older budgie accept a new pal?

Adding another budgie could be very sucessful for both birds, but also could take an unexpected wrong turn. Since you budgie may still be grieving, it's best to introduce the other male very slowly. do not just throw him in the cage with the other one. The older budgie may get stressed and could even hurt your other budgie. I reccomend seperating the birds in different cages, but having them side by side. This way both birds will get to know each other and spend time with eachother, but also have their own space. Kinda like a loving fence. Do this for at least a month, until you notice the budgies talk to each other, look at each other and interact. If the budgies don't talk at all and seem to be "skawing" at each other, it may be best to leave them seperated. If it goes smoothy, you can gradually introduce one budgie to the other. Place them together in the same cage for about an hour, and watch their behaivour. Sorta like a playdate with each other. If you notice them to be bickering, picking at eachother and yelling, then take the budgie out ASAP and seperate them again. But, if they sharpen each other's beaks, cuddle, chirp and play then you are free to leave them together for about an hour, but make sure you are keeping an eye on them, like I said, it could take a very unexpected turn. If your birds got along for the hour, seperate them again. I know it may seem annoying because you think they are getting along, but it's best to do this so they still have some space. Have 'Playdates" each day for about a week and a half, if everything seems to be running smoothy it may be time for your colorful companions to live together. Place the budgies together and watch their behaivour percisely. DO NOT leave them alone for the first two days. Always keep a close eye on them. That's why I suggest your first few days are on a weekend. Make sure you have double everything in the cage, double water, food, and toys. If all this goes as planned it looks like your safe! If not, you can always have them seperated, but together too! Hope this helps! :)
