He had told me and my mother that in order for me to live there I have to be on the lease because I am over 18. He told us that me being on the lease would't affect me in anyway. and now were both being sued because she is behind a month on rent!

Yes, what he has done is mitigate his risk. Rather than have one person responsible for the rent, he has got himself two (making himself more likely to have the rent paid, or retrieve it through litigation). However, to do this, he has lied to you by saying it would have no affect on you. Strictly he is in the wrong, but a court of law would say you signed the lease (and presumably read the lease before you signed it) and that this is a binding contract.
If you want a way out of this without being sued, find some way of paying the rent. However this works between you and your mother is irrelevant, you can make it right with each other later. In the short term, you just need to pay your the landlord. And perhaps find somewhere else to live with an honest landlord.
