... So I've been researching a litle to try to answer this question and the consensus seems to be that they can't. But why then, when I observe my cat in the dark with my security camera ahe responds to the nightvision, is that not using infrared?
The cat 'responds' in as much as soon I go to the feed the night vision s activated and the cat is instantly aware of the camera and stares straight at it intensley, I turn the view of the camera away from her for a while (presumably alternating the direction of the infrared light?) On returning to view the cat she will instantly turn to stare straight at camera - would this not indicate an ability to detect infrared and therefore contrary to what many experts and studies suggest...?
