An arithmetic sequence is when a fixed value is added at each step. An algebraic sequence is when the number is multiplied by a fixed value at each step. A geometric sequence is when a fixed power is applied at each step. The example you give is none of the above. That says you take your number, subtract 1, multiply by 5, and add 3 to get the next number.
