Can anyone give me information about tree pruning?

If you're in the northern hemisphere, now is the perfect time for pruning. It gives the tree chance to heal before the growth spurt in Spring. One thing I was always taught is that you shouldn't prune too much for aesthetics but instead for the health of the tree. i.e. before you prune any branch, think "Why am I doing this?" If the branch is dead or diseased or will become a problem later, then yes, pruning it is the right thing to do.

Some people think pruning right back is good for the tree, like a fresh start (or a "haircut, I once heard someone say). But overpruning can really distress a tree and not be good for it in the long run.
